MGP said: I have some friends and clients in the molding business. I asked a friend (who's an industry expert in plastics molding) what he figured a golf ball cost to manufacture -- his answer, probably not more than about 30-50 cents, including all labor but no packaging. Packaging probably adds only 25 cents or less per dozen. It wouldn't make any difference whether is was a premium ball or cheapie -- the machines they make them on are the same and the materials cost are within pennies for all of them. Labor costs are very low either way as the process, except for QC is almost totally automated. Molded products generally have a very high gross profit margin. Make for pennies, sell for dollars. BUT... you have to look at how much money they spend on R&D, sales & marketing and of course they'll always sell for as much as people are willing to spend on them. They have a bunch of different models to fit price-point markets based on what people are willing to pay and they market and sell those balls specifically to those markets. I doubt seriously there's much of a production cost difference between say, a NXT Tour ball and a ProV1. They sell them to different players at a different price though. Depending on how they do their accounting they may be very profitable or a "loss leader". No matter how they do it, I'm pretty sure Titleist makes a bundle on their top tier golf balls and probably on ALL their balls. They've been at the game for a long time and the golf ball leader for the entire time they've been in the business.
