Question for the V2 users/owners...
S*ndy said: So, as you may remember, I was hitting my Nike SQ460 very nicely but having a few issues with the shaft as my swing speed was increasing and my distance getting better. People were commenting on the tremendous lag I was getting in my swing, and I became prone to the odd snap-hook from time to time, which along with the feedback I was getting from my swings led me to believe the stock regular shaft was too soft for me. Like several people on here I wanted a shaft that would be firmer but didn't feel I could handle a proper 'stiff' shaft, so went with a regular flex V2 65g into the SQ. I've had a couple of rounds with it now, as well as several range sessions, and am finally getting a handle on how to swing it, but wanted to see if my experiences are typical among the V2 users, and are to be expected. Basically, I've found that where the stock shaft was fine for slower, smoother swings but went to pieces when I tried to hit one harder, the V2 is the total opposite and needs me to really go after it to get anything out of it. My 'old swing' has a tendency to fade at best with this combo, but can easily become a slice if I try and nurse the ball out there and doesn't seem to add any distance. But if I really go after one with it I seem to get a decent distance gain and the shot straightens out considerably. What I've discovered is that I'm having to really release my bottom hand through the swing to get the best from the shaft, and that really seems to make it kick and gives a totally different feel as it connects with the ball. To that end I ended up revisiting my old 10-finger grip with my driver yesterday (which I find brings my bottom hand through much more effectively) and it gave much better results! Is this typical with the change to a V2? I know I'm changing from a softer, low kick-point shaft to something with a totally different profile, but am I right in finding that the V2 not only responds to harder swings in this way, but that I really need to get my bottom hand through on the shot to get the best results? I should point out that by the end of the round, when I'd got more confident with this combo, I was hitting some of the best drives I've ever hit - straighter, penetrating flight, and all rolling out a good 10 to 15 yards further than the old stock combo. It did make me realize that I was no longer going to get away with half-hearted, end-of-the-round swings with it any more, though!

S*ndy said: Thanks for that, WBL - I think the 'speed up through the ball' is the important part, as it seems that I really have to whip the clubhead through towards impact to get the best out of the shaft, rather than make my 'old' swing but a lot harder. My suspicion is that this is because of the mid-bendpoint of the shaft as much as anything, needing that extra kick to bring the clubhead through properly compared to the low-kick shafts I'm used to...

If I accelerate the clubhead in a linear manner, I get good results, and can swing as hard as I want without snap-hooking the ball, which has been my big problem when trying to swing "faster" with softer tip drivers (like the YS-6). The V2 lets me swing fast, but I feel like I can't "snap" the club through the ball. I need to "pull" the club, which for me is the right way to swing. I've found that I get good distance with a smooth (yet forceful) swing. If I overswing, the ball goes on a higher trajectory. But I'm impressed with how stable the V2 is when I get into the "crush it" mentality. Instead of snap-hooking and slicing wildly, the result is a higher trajectory, and a gentle reminder to "ease back". I really like this shaft.

Makes perfect sense - you and WBL are doing a good job of explaining exactly what I've been feeling much better than I did! As I said, the big difference for me was the need to really bring the bottom hand through and release the club properly to get the shaft to kick the ball through, whereas with a softer, lower kick shaft I could force the club through without such a good bottom hand release and still get the clubhead to come through. As you said, the result was often a hook, while the V2 seems to reward a 'proper' swing much more.

Feels fine until about 2/3rds of the way down the shaft. If I can get a good deal on Graman UL780 or 680 i'm outta here. Started off fine with it doing lazy ~100-105 mph swings but try to step on it and it's pull-hook city. Maybe the X-stiff is the way to go but I think that may still be too tip-weak for me. I don't know anymore. Maybe i'm just not the golfer I think I am.:dead:
