In your humble opinion - Best gear?

w*rehair said: I think this could be fun. For whatever reason, keep it simple. I'll go first, I'm basing it on overall strength of their various models over the last several years. Driver 1. Taylor Made - R580XD 2. Cleveland - Launchers Fairway 1. Ping - TiSi 2. Adams - Tight Lies Hybrid 1. Taylor Made - Rescue Mid 2. Cleveland - Halo Irons 1. Mizuno - almost all of them 2. Titleist - 690 Wedges 1. Titleist/Vokey - spin milled 2. Cleveland - 588 Putter 1. Titleist/Cameron - Anything except Futuras & detours 2. Odyssey - 2 ball

R*ckford35 said: While I don't really understand what basis this is made on, I'll chime in for no reason. My choices are built solely on what I've seen the most of over the years since I started playing when I was 4....D Driver 1. Callaway Big Bertha - still the most recognized name in golf 2. Titleist 9 series - always solid Fairway 1. Callaway - still the best after many years... 2. Adams - Tight Lies (I agree with this, even tho I've never played one) Hybrid 1. Hogan 2. Bridgestone Irons 1. Ping - somehow, they've always had a following... 2. everything else...maybe Hogan moreso... Wedges 1. Cleveland 588 2. Vokey Putter Tie. Two Ball Tie. Ping Anser R35

*racer said: Wirehair - Please don't lump the Futura Mallet in with the Futura Phantom. I've owned both, and they are not the same club. Not by a long shot. I couldn't stand the Phantom, and I've yet to find anything I like better than the Mallet - and if you saw my closet, you would know that I am the KING of putter ho's...

J*FF4i said: Driver: 1. Titleist 9 Series. As Rock said, always solid, and great clubs. 2. Callaway, their newer stuff doesn't suit me, but I was a huge fan of the Hawk Eyes and other Big Berthas. Fairway: 1. Callaway, people always seem to love them. 2. Not sure, a lot of people really enjoy the V-Steels from TM, but, I'm even a fan of the Cobra and Orlimar fairway woods. Hybrid: 1. Objectively....Bridgestone 2. What is Warbird's? I forgot. That one. Irons: 1. Ping. Zings, Is, all of them, great irons. 2. Titleist. More of a players iron than most Pings, and Titleist has it's great track record of making great irons. 3. Mizuno. One of the oldest, many people go to Mizzy and never go back. Myself included. Wedges: 1. Cleveland, whether I only like one of theirs or not, it's pretty much accepted Cleveland is the wedge king. 2. Callaway. The reason being, they offer a great variety. From cavity backs, to forged, to blade style. Putters: Easiest of them all. 1. Callaways(White Hot) 2. Titleist (Camerons, I don't like them, but you gotta admit...) Yes, I know there are no TaylorMade's on there. I love their clubs, namely their drivers. I think they make all around great clubs in every aspect, but don't dominate any one of them for the absolute best. This is pretty much objective, since I hit all models of the 905 eventually, and thought they were okay, but still prefered my r7, same for the new Callaways.

w*rbirdlover said: Driver: 1. TaylorMade R580 XD series. Best driver ever made for the price. 2. Callaway Big Bertha changed the way people thought about oversize drivers. Fairway: 1. Adams Tight Lies. 2. TaylorMade V-Steels. Hybrid: 1. Nickent without question 2. Cobra Baffler. Irons: 1. Ping. Eye2's or i3's. 2. Mizuno. 3. Hogan Edge. Wedges: 1. Cleveland 588 series. 2. Titleist Vokey. Putters: 1. Odyssey 2-Ball series. I've seen it transform more bad putters into good putters then any other putter. 2. Titleist Camerons. 3. Ping Anser.

FK*19 said: looks like my clubs have quite the following.... 580xd,vsteel,588s/vokey, and odyssey putter :idhitit:. i guess none of you have HIT the ta2s

V*teWhitey4Prez said: I like this thread because Callaway and Ping are mentioned a lot, and that is what I happen to have.

FK*19 said: my turn.... 1. TaylorMade R580 XD series. SOLID club. excellent value :) 2. Titleist 9 series are always good Fairway: 1. Orlimar trimetals - super easy off the deck 2. TaylorMade V-Steels - best there is Hybrid: 1. Nickent - although my 2i is coming back in the bag, still a solid club 2. Bridgestone Irons: 1. Cleveland - wicked irons, form forged, so great feel, but still incredibly durablw. 2. Mizuno - can't go wrong with grain flow forging Wedges: 1. Cleveland 588 series 2. Titleist Vokey simply the best (hense why theyre in my bag) - ill give a shout for the tm rac's though, also great wedges. Putters: 1. Odyssey - solid 2. Titleist Camerons - that's a given, great putters

l*mpalong said: "...overall strength of their various models over the last several years." Driver 1. Callaway - from the original Big Bertha to today's models have been the market leader in this category. The C4 was the only real disaster of the past 15 years. 2. Taylor Made - Darrell Survey winner due to tee up money. Had some struggles through the "bubble shaft" era, but are now extremely strong. Fairways 1. Callaway - Still see an S2H2 once in a while. Just classic fairways year after year after year. 2. Adams - I agree with the other poster who named Adams. Barney's Tight Lies started a move toward lower profile fariways that were easy to hit. Has had tremendous staying power for a 2nd tier OEM. Hybrids 1. Nickent - A virtual unknown that has made believers out of folks who would typically walk right by their equipment in a shop. 2. Adams - Their combo sets have allowed many to enjoy hybrids without having to purchase outside of their regular set. Irons 1. Ping - Simply the standard others strive to match. Year after year... generation after generation... they continue to build rock solid, indestructible, playable irons. 2. Mizuno - The standard of forgings for generations. Wedges 1. Cleveland - Simply the most played wedge in the history of the game. I've had a dozen different ones and, personally, have not found one I like. Yet, you cannot argue with the huge success on tour... in amateur's bags... in the marketplace. 2. Tie: Vokey and Ping - Bob Vokey's relationship with Titleist has seen his wedges become indelibly etched into the history of golf equipment. Ping Eye 2's are still on tour and still are played by huge numbers of amateurs. Again, you cannot argue with success and both Vokey and Ping are pillars of success in the wedge market. Putter 1. Odyssey - From the Rossies to the White Hots to the 2-Balls... this line was a huge success even before being purchased by Callaway. Start looking through the bags at your local course and count the Odyssey's. 2. Ping - The Anser is still the most copied putter in history. Ping continues to bring out new designs like the CrazE and the UglE and the Doc. It is extremely limiting to be restricted to 2 in each category. Titleist has a cult following but has never had the sales numbers of some of the other OEM's. Solid equipment, but really focused toward the better player. Cameron has that same cult following in putters. But, begin counting clubs in bags. The price line is high end and you will still see more Odyssey's and Ping's that Cameron's at most courses. How do you pass up the success Callaway has had with their iron line and the wedges since Roger Cleveland has joined them? How do you not be able to list Hogan and their forged irons? Are they that quickly forgotten after being "rubbed out" by Callaway? We are blessed to have great choices in golf equipment. DB's like this would go begging if we couldn't argue/discuss the benefits of forged vs. cast and Ping vs. Mizuno. The above are just my opinions....

R*ckinMA said: Driver - I'm going to agree with Rock on the original Big Bertha - I could never hit one, but they were nice and changed the game Irons - I think the King Cobra's are up there (distance wise they were great - but that's what happens when you stamp a "7" on a 6 iron) wedges - I have to go with the classic -the Wilson sandwedge - I think everyone has one in the garage or basement. followed by any of the clevelands putters - all time, I'd say the bullseye style first, followed by a tie between the Rossie and B-60

BSt*ne said: Quote: Originally Posted by Rockford35 And me. I never got this. "The 580XD is the best bang for the buck. But I don't play one." WTF is that? R35 Never liked it all that much myself, went straight from the 510 TP to the r7 TP. Had a tour issued 580 XD for a while, but couldn't keep it in the bag for too long.

*zra76 said: Drivers 1. Do I need the answer this? R series. From the 510TP all the way to the current line. 2. 9 series. If I wasn't playing a TM I'd go for one. FW's 1. Taylormade... why? 200steel up the current R7TP's, longest and easiest to hit FW's for me. IMO thier FW's are even better than the driver line. 2. Tour Edge, made a name for themselves with the Exotics Hybrids 1. Sonartec by a long shot. They still have one of the best in the MD and the thing is like 5 or 6 yrs. old. 2. Adams, again, like TEE have made a name with the hybrids Irons 1. Mizuno, hit one... if you like a Ping or Callway X series better?? You'd prefer to drive a dump truck instead of a Corvette too. 2. Bridgestone, again, hit one. (just to note... Miura buries the competition but I disclude them due to price and availability) Wedges 1. Vokey 2. MP series I could play either of these and be happy with them Putters No vote here. Whatever holes it. I don't care if it's a Circle T worth more than a used car or a 37yr. old Anser. There is no best putter... only the best puttee's.

ch*mboy2 said: With only a few years into this game playing non-knock off clubs (I was cheap SOB, hmm, still am actually) I submit the following: Driver: Callaway - gave us the oversize driver Nike - the only driver that I've been able to hit straight every time FW: TM - VSteel all the way Adams - really did to FWs what Cally did to drivers, only in the other direction wrt size Hybrids: Sonartec - truly a more forgiving long iron replacement and not just a small FW Adams - really pushed this category before other OEMs got on board Irons: Miura - man, I wish I wasn't so damn cheap... Mizuno - solid forged irons for the playa AND the mid-capper Wedges: I'm not qualified to comment in this one - my first real wedge was a Vokey Putter: Odyssey 2Ball - revolutionary Ping Anser - really, I mean, my Studio Style Newport 2 (like so many others) is simply someone elses twist on that simply classic design Ball: I'm listing Titleist here for obvious reasons but I don't know how long they will hold this position - Bridgestone, Srixon, and Callaway are coming on STRONG.

*racer said: I don't know how to answer this. Best gear? That depends on who's swinging the clubs. If you're talking about most important gear, historically: Driver - TaylorMade Metalwood. The first successful metal driver. Changed the game forever. Fairway - Adams. The upside-down head was revolutionary. It worked, and people bought it by the millions. Hybrid - Adams. The innovation that started the hybrid revolution. Irons - Callaway Big Bertha. The first irons that delivered on the promise of maximum forgiveness. Wedges - Cleveland. The company simply would not exist without them. #1 seller for a reason. Putter - Ping Anser. Look how many heel-toe designs are still being sold.

BSt*ne said: Quote: Originally Posted by Adam Pettman Are the Adams wedges really that good? I've been tempted to try them for ages now. The Pugielli wedges are, not the Watson series. Max Pugielli is one of the premier club designers in the world. They have a very classic look to them and the milling on the face is as crisp as any wedge out there, very deep marks and very solid feel.

*altim said: Driver 1. Tour Edge Exotics 2. Snake Eyes Viper Ti-4 Fairway 1. Tour Edge Exoctics 2. Tour Edge Bazooka JMAX Carbon Hybrid 1. Tour Edge Bazooka JMAX Tour 2. Cleveland Halo Irons 1. The rest of them.... Well, thats my list of what I could squeeze out of my brain. I have not explored all of the options avialable, so it is by no means a finshed list. On most of the items, they are the same ones that are in my bag. If I did not believe them to be the best for my game, why would I play them? In most instances where the #1 is not in my bag it purely comes down to acquisition cost/value at current prices. Enjoy, ualtim
