I am planning a trip to Dick's this Friday and would like to swing a couple of there drivers and fairway woods. I would like to make it easy and just trade this for something else instead of having to sell this to someone ship it out and then going to buy something else. Is this a good idea or will I not get the value of the driver back?

ch*mboy2 said: That's a tough call because at some point there are diminishing returns. I'd think a G5 in solid shape would command much more for resale than it would for trade. A quick check of the pga.com value guide has the trade-in estimate at $99 and the resale estimate at $170. Assuming you sold it in ConUS, you're looking at less than $20 shipping which still leaves $50. That $50 delta could be a shaft upgrade for your new stick. My advice would be to at least test the waters a bit before just trading it in. Some other things to ponder. These estimates are mid ranges and you can be assured you won't even get a mid-range with the trade-in but your set-up in solid condition could probably sell for at least the mid-range estimate. (then again the G10 is about to come out and can see the used market being flooded with G5s) The up side is that it is a PING which means you won't see the G5 show up at an on-line discount shop for $100 but I'd still say that NOW is definitely the time to move it!

The only store that used to give good value for trade-ins was Golfsmith, from my experience, and they obviously realized something was wrong and reduced theiur trade values dramatically a few months back. Given all the big golf stores around here I was able on several occassions to buy a pre-owned club at Golf Galaxy or Edwin Watts and trade it back in for more than I paid for it at Golfsmith. The flipside of that was that their pre-owned stuff was always more expensive than anywhere else, and even now it seems they're lumbered with a load of stuff they got as trade-ins and have to keep high prices on. Just the other day I was in Golfsmith and noticed how many of their pre-owned clubs are priced as more expensive as the new equivalents now the new stuff has been discounted.

Didn't realize this, or even that Dick's took trade ins. Probably explains why all the ball price on sales and clearance are the same at both now. Sell it in eBay and make alot more! While neither Golf Galaxy or Golfsmith will give you a great deal or what you can fetch on ebay, I think Golf Galaxy may give a little more. Personally eBay is too much of a hassle for me when it comes to selling clubs. So that being said, I would note they give you more like 25-30%, which for me is still better than the hassle of selling online and allows me to get my clubs immediately. Made two trade-ins this year, and to give an idea of prices which can also be checked online. $34 a piece on Cleveland Halo's. Did I get ripped off, sure, but I had the Baffler I wanted that day and as the used with no marks had no price they gave it to me for $50. So not a bad trade IMO. Had I not been able to get the Baffler for trade I wouldn't have made the deal. Golf Galaxy gave me $31 for my Mizuno Black OX Wedge. Again, a rip off, but considering I bought it with 20% off at my pro shop for $80, and walked out with the Ping wedge I wanted and could use in the following days round, not bad IMO. So if you want to look at it as only getting 20% of what you paid, then you are in fact being ripped off. But if you want to look at it in the sense that they are giving about 60-70% of what they will likely fetch on the market for the club, and taking the hassle out of your hands on being the middle man, it is not a bad deal. I guess it really comes down to the value that you place on your time, and for me when I start thinking about the time I would spend selling on eBay or elsewhere, it starts to make me think of the money I am losing by working for eBay at about $10 per hour. Then I further start thinking of the clubs sitting up in my attic that could have fetched me a few bucks had I realized this a few years ago. Not good enough to say I got a good deal, or even say I didn't get ripped off, but at least for me it seemed like a better deal than spending a few hours of my time to make an extra $20. edit 1 - Thinking about it, I do not throw clubs or get upset on the course, but that SW darn near ended up in the woods a couple weeks ago. Had it not been for the fact that I thought I may get $20-30 it certainly would have been a goner. So on that one, I actually felt like I got the last laugh. :D

W*-Golfer said: Seems like Golf Galaxy has been jacking up the prices of their used clubs lately. I stop in every couple of weeks & have picked up a few decent finds in the $20-40 range but more & more it seems like the pricing is now $79-99 unless you want total junk. I was looking for a hybrid 3 iron a couple weeks ago & the used ones were anywhere from $70-130, I said screw it & decided to buy a new Cleveland halo for $99.
