Iron set - Need opinion
shw_1979 said: Hi Guys, Just wondering that now I got around 600 USD to spend on iron set, which one do you think is a wiser choice for beginner but would be benefits for long run(let say one time buy for the next couple of years) 1. Full set of CG Gold 2. Full set of TM r7 Draw 3. Half set of custom fitted Ping G10 (4 sticks - planning to choose 3,5,7,9 or 5,7,9 and a hybrid (TM)) All of them cost about the same. So many friends give me various advices, so, now I'm totally confuse. Many of them told me that opt.1 is better due to I will not need custom yet, but another guy who bring me to know golf for the 1st time says that opt 3 is better fo long run.... So, which one is a wiser way to spend my hard earned money? Thx Guys
th*mper said: I would seriously consider PING G10's, you could get 5-PW or 6-uw for about $525, you can always order additional irons with the same S/N, built to your specs. There are some great deals on hybrids out there as well. I bought my adams os#2, new for $49. You could also consider PING G5's, they are selling for $499 new, for 8 irons. You simply cannot go wrong with PING, they hold their value better than any other iron and you can play them forever even as your hdcp improves into the single digits. Good luck

tr*mb1mj said: not the draw version. I am around a 10 handicap. These are great clubs. They added loft and height to my ball flight. I am able to work a draw (have a natural draw) and fade with ease. I'm not sure if they are beginner club but they are certainly easier to hit hit than my old sticks, Nike CPRs. Sorry I couldn't be more help with the draws. All I can say is hit a lot of clubs and don't settle for something that you can't smooth regularly. Good luck!

MGP said: You guys all realize he was talking about a half set of G10's and a full set of the other two, right?
shw_1979 said: Hmmm.... yup, does your advice considering that my money can only afford half set of G10? while for other is full set? I don't know why ping is so expensive here. Just asked that custom fitted will cost me around 130 usd per stick..... Geez..... If you guys think that I will benefits more on using half set of custom fitted compare to have full set of others and my height is around 170cm..... could you enlighten me with the reason? Actually sometimes i think that half set is more than enough if you can control your swing power to cover the distance of the even number club... but I personally don't know whether a beginner could do that instead of changing the iron and use always full swing.
5*ron said: I have no idea how any of those clubs will do or how they are, so sorry about that, but with half a set of fitted G10's, would you play your previous irons, where you dont have a G10 iron? For example maybe you would use your previous 6 iron or something ? Thanks-
shw_1979 said: Yup, I have mizuno finalist as my current set (my first set also). So if I bought half set, I might still bring the other half set of mizuno so that I can still use them if necessary. But frankly, the main reason of why I want a new set is I don't like the feel of this mizuno, the balance, the weight, the flex of the shaft etc, those 3 that I listed is much more suitable for me. But a club is still a club, and I can still use my current to get decent distance as I'm used to them already.
hyp*rgolf said: How about a full set of fitted Ping G5?
shw_1979 said: Hypergolf, If I'm not mistaken you live in Iindonesia right? So, I haven't checked fitted G5, but do you know how much it is in Indonesia?
W*nnaBeBogeyFree said: Why are you only choosing those 3 options? Here's my 2 cents: Go get custom fitted for irons before you buy a set. Many golf shops can do this for you. Lie, length, flex, grip size. That's all you really need as a beginner. Then call up a store like Golfsmith or Golfworks, speak with their personnel about what model of iron will fit your needs best. Then have them customise a set for you with your fitting specs, for less than the OEM sticks.
d*ve. said: As a beginner I would go 6,7,8,9 and a hybrid, I know its one more club than your budget but for a beginner its actually not a half set, its a full set, you do not need anything longer than a 6 iron, apart from the hybrid for tight tee shots and longer approaches when you get into the game a bit. The hybrid should be a 24 degree, based on the 6 iron probably being 26 degrees

Their reason is actually beginner due to unconsistent swing, there will be no different whether you use 6.7 or 5,6 or etc. if you skip 1 like 5,7 than you will get the difference. could you tell me more why it is better to get 6,7,8,9,and 24 hybrid (suppose to this is 5i replacement). Is it because for beginner, the focussing on improving the short game will make imrpove the score better? and after I progress to be better, than improving the long game would be next task? In that case, is it would be better if I just stick using the hybrid for tee off even for 5 par course instead of using driver if I can hit my hybrid more consistend than my driver (in sacrifice of distance of course)?
*racer said: No good can come from a beginner having a 3-iron in their bag. Even a 5-iron is marginal. Listen to dave. He knows what he's talking about.
*zra76 said: Check on Callway Preowned as well. They have some good prices on certified preowned. I'm half thinking about a set of Xtours myself.

In that case, is it would be better if I just stick using the hybrid for tee off even for 5 par course instead of using driver if I can hit my hybrid more consistend than my driver (in sacrifice of distance of course)? you answered your own question:) beginner - max a 6 iron, take hybrids and play safely from further out 12-18 handicaps - go to a 5 iron, but still keep a couple of hybrids single figs- go to 4 iron, still keep a 5 wood or hybrid at 19/20 degs scratch, very low, MAYBE go to 3 iron pros, switch between 2 iron and 5 wood This is just my 'average' take on it. There is simply no need to play a long iron as a beginner. You will not regret buying the 6,7,8, and 9 pus the hybrid. When you are say 160+ and need a longer iron, stun your mates and use your handicap, play the 6 short into saftey, chip and couple of putts = bogey = handicap coming down. From say 180 just sweep away a little hybrid anywhere near the green for same result, even a double bogey is fine. Forget long irons. Learn to sweep away a drive, chip consistently, putt well and stike consistently the irons. When far out, USE YOUR HANDICAP! Forget the flag, hit one of your irons into safety and chip and putt
shw_1979 said: Ezra, I thought that you have already found your iron... lol. You are absolutely a Ho..... Btw since I live in Indonesia, my selection for pre-owned with reasonable price as you guys is very limited. pre-owned xtours here can be had for USD 600 + which is too much I guess. I don't think we have such callaway pre-owned or global golf here... Dave, many thanks..... now I know what to buy and use the budget wisely. 1 more question Dave... you mentiond for mid 12-18 caps, you mentioned couple of hybrid... what degree for those hybrids are?
