Would these be good clubs for a beginner?

j*e111 said: Hello all. I have read lots of posts and posted on other forums, but thought I'd give it a try here too. I would like to get a new set of clubs as I have been playing for a few years on an old garage sale set. I wanted to keep it around $300 and I was thinking of just getting a new complete set, but after reading forums and looking around it sounds like that is a bad idea. Even though I probably am still not going to play more than 15 times a year or so (plus I will probably go to the range a lot), I suppose spending another hundred or so isn't going to hurt me too much. So anyways, I have been reading lots of posts and looking around at Rockbottomgolf.com and came across a few Adams sets I wanted to ask you guys about. How do you think the A2 set ($269 or it is $249 if you buy from Rockbottom through ebay) would be for me? That caught my attention because it has a couple hybrids too which I would want anways insted of the long irons. And that price seems very cheap as I have seen it for $399 at other stores. I was thinking maybe that, and just use the 1 and 3 wood I have now. They are cheap ones, but I have managed to hit the 3 wood pretty straight at the range. And I could get a better wood later on. The other set I saw there was the Tight Lies for $129, and then I would have to get some hybrids too. Which set (or other) would be best for me to continue to learn on and improve on and continue to use for a long time? I know I have read to get used ones, but since I don't plan to play everyday and become a pro at this, I probably am not going to be replacing them for a long time so I would like to just get something new, especially in the price range it is only around $100 or so more than some used ones I have read that are recommended to beginners. What do you guys think?

R*ckford35 said: The A2 is a great set, especially for a beginner. I say nab them. Then, when you get a little bit more solid and confident in your swing, go and get properly fitted for a set of irons and hybrids that are a bit more tailor made to your specific swing. Good pricing on those Adams, BTW. Welcome to the board! :thumbs up: R35

Definitely stay away from the Adam's tight lies. Quality on those is shiat.

j*e111 said: Are they as easy to hit or easier than something like the tight lies? I hate to buy something without seeing it, but I guess I can't really buy something like this in the store because they probably don't have last years models anymore. Is it wise to buy something without trying it? I'm sure anything is better than what I have though so I can't do any worse!

T*pflite_D2 said: Yeah I agree with the posts above me. I would say take a gander around on Ebay and Global golf, they both have real good deals on clubs, I got my iron for $120 shipped off ebay.

That might give you a better idea of what you like and don't like. And it will eliminate alot in one fell swoop. R35

With advice from people that have been golfing for as long as some of us, you cant really get terrible clubs. See, recommending clubs for straight beginners is fairly easy. They dont have their swing set in stone yet, so no need to go get custom fitted. We simply recommend the most forgiving clubs out there from our experience. So when you get to a lower handicap, we are expecting you to buy a more advanced set. But buying an advanced set now works for some people, but not for all too many. Definitely dont just look at rockbottom. I personally dont like their pricing. I think its kinda steep. Take a hard look at ebay. Id look for some Mizuno MX-900's or Mizuno MX-23's or Taylormade RAC OS's / OS2's. Any of those would be excellent sets for a beginner.

j*e111 said: Yeah that makes sense. I am not going to be like some people I see that have top of the line expensive equipment and can't play at all! I will go check out some stores again and try out some clubs. I have done that before, and to be honest, they all were a lot easier to hit than what I have because mine are not cavity backs. Even some of the complete sets I hit there were fine. I'll check out those Taylor Mades and Mizunos you mentioned, but they are probably going to be a little more expensive. And if they come with the 3 and 4 irons, I am probably going to want to replace those with hybrids anyways because I have tried hybrids in the store and liked how they were easy to hit.

mdd*bya said: You could always go to your local golf shop and hit some Cleveland HiBore irons. If you lile them I just happen to know someone with a mint condition set for sale for about the price you said you wanted to pay. :biglol: And welcome to ShotTalk, the best golf forum on the web.

j*e111 said: This forum is great, you guys post so quickly! But now I am afraid I am going to get so much information and different clubs to look it, it will confuse me more! Oh well, hopefully I will figure out something sometime this month. Thanks for all your help so far and for future posts as well.

mdd*bya said: The best thing you could do would be go to your local golf shop and hit as many clubs as they will let you.Even if you are hitting this years models, there probably isn't going to be that much difference between them and the ones a couple of years old. Especially in irons, technology moves pretty slow.Find out what feels good to you and go from there.

j*e111 said: Whats the A2OS? I didnt see those there. By the way, I do want the steel shafts right?

Yes steel shafts would be optimal unless you have arthritis or are a senior in need of a lighter shaft. check your PM's, i sent you a link to a set of irons on ebay that would be good for you.

j*e111 said: Thanks footballking and everyone else. I appreciate your help and trying to save me money, but I really would prefer to get a new set (I am talking like something that is a year or two old model that is going to be quite a bit cheaper than something from 2008) at either a local shop or more likely on one of the sites you guys talk about around here. I know it would save me money to go buy a used set like you showed me, and have the shafts cut down, and regripped, but I really don't want to go through all if its only going to save me $100 or so. I normally don't mind buying used anything, but in this case when I plan on keeping it for a while at least, I think I'd rather just get something new because its not like I am just going to play with it for a year or so and then go and buy new clubs. So again I do appreciate you trying to save me money, but I think it would make it more worth it to me to just find a good new where I don't have to worry about searching for used sets. Thanks again. T*gers789 said: I bought the A2's before the season from rockbottomgolf. I have used them for 5 driving range sessions and 3 rounds of golf, and they are awesome. Very easy to get the ball in the air. The ball seems to just rocket off the hybrids also. I would highly recommend this set!

RC52 said: I've been pretty happy with my Top Flite Xl box set (driver, 3 wood, 4H, 5H 6-PW and Putter-$200). Than I bought a 18* Tommy Armour Silver Scot Hybrid ($20 with a grafalloy prolaunch shaft), and a set of Golden Bear wedges 52*, 56*, 60* ($40), glove ($10), and Top Flite D2 distance ball and etc ($30) I'm still working on my swing but i can say that I put together i pretty nice new complete set for $300.

j*e111 said: Just to update, I did order the A2 set from Rockbottom the other day. It would figure they lowered the price $20 more the next day! But I don't care, I got them and the Tom Watson 3 wedge set for $325 total with shipping. I can't wait to try them out. Thanks for everyone's help. I will let you know how I am doin after I use them for a bit and take a few lessons I have coming within the next month or so.
