Which bounce is for me?
jskd82 said: I currently have adams tom watson wedges. These have a very thin sole and everytime I try to hit a full shot with them I take a huge chunk out of the ground and the ball goes rolling only half way to the hole. I am thinking that this is because I take decent size divots and the thin sole of these just cut right into the grass and go completely under the ball missing it. Any ideas on if I need different bounce wedges or if there is something that I need to adjust in my setup when using these wedges? BTW I hit my irons well, if that makes any difference.

Or something like that, anyway. Just see if you notice a big difference. From what you're saying, it sounds like higher bounce would be better for you. What are the various bounce angles on the wedges you're using? You really gotta know that...
jskd82 said: they are.... 52* 07 bounce 56* 13 bounce and 60* 07 bounce. I set up with the ball on the inside of my right foot (hitting right handed.) Should I move the ball further back in my stance?
S*lverUberXeno said: I think you should put it in the middle and see what happens. You're de-lofting the clubface playing the ball back that far, and it will encourage you to dig into the ground a lot more. Play the ball in the middle. Those bounces are just about ideal, and they're varied enough to where you have a variety of options. Do you play your short irons off your back foot? I don't play ANY ordinary shot farther back than center. Only if I'm trying to hit a shot that isn't normal, aka knockdown, low punch, etc. Try it from the center.
jskd82 said: thanks, ill give it a try and yes I do play my pw and 9 iron back in my stance and my 8 iron is in the middle of my stance. My 3h 4h 5,6,7 and 8 irons are all played in the middle of my stance. Not sure why I play the others so far back in my stance.
*racer said: Those are pretty low-bounce wedges, but not super-low. However the narrow sole combined with a steep downswing can definitely cause you problems. And if you play on soft turf, like we have here in florida, they will be even more difficult to hit consistently well. I like SUX's advice. Go somewhere that sells used clubs. You should be able to find wedges cheap.

I think you just need to work on your swing while using the club, since you say you hit your irons fine. When hitting with the SW, I keep it just back of center, on fringe / off green chips, I play it off my right foot.
f*otballking732 said: i wouldnt buy new wedges.. the bounces on those wedges are higher than my wedges, and mine are average. play the ball farther forward to dig less, maybe start halfway between middle and your right foot, and then adjust as you feel is necessary.. remember, your divot should be AFTER the ball, not before it... the only way to put spin on the ball is to strike a descending blow to the back of the ball, not to the ground behind it..
S*lverUberXeno said: And for the record, I play a 3* bounce lob wedge without any real digging issues =P. So your 7* is plenty to me.
jskd82 said: Are the higher lofted wedges (52,56,60) supposed to be really short compared to a pw length? For some reason the adams wedges feel really short and feel somewhat awkward and I don't have a whole lot of confidence in them when holding them in my hands.
k*wi said: If they feel unnaturally short to you your local pro should be able to extend them pretty cheap

Do you still have the retail grips on those? I have a set of Adams Watson wedges and absolutely hated the cheesy tour wrap knockoff grips that came on them. They were thinner and harder than I like and also smelled bad (stinky rubber smell). It may sound crazy but to me they made the clubs feel "short" also. Once I re-gripped them with GP DD2 grips all was well. I really like the wedges and hit them well. They are my backup wedges and I still practice with them occasionally. I think the bounces on them are a good comprimise and work pretty well for the "average" golfer and are not too extreme either way. If I get a chance I'll throw them on the club bench and measure them. I'm pretty sure they are standard length though. Edit: OK, I just measured them and the LW and SW are 35". The GW is 35.5". These are pretty much standard lengths and the same lengths as my other wedges.
jskd82 said: Thanks for taking the time to measure them, I changed the grips to match with my irons. It may be that these wedges just feel really light.
jskd82 said: Ok so compared to my pw, the adams 52* is about a 1/4" shorter, the 56* is about 1/2" shorter and the 60* is an inch shorter. Is that normal? I would like to have them all the same length as my pw, would that be ok to do?
S*lverUberXeno said: My wedges are progressively shorter as well. I'm pretty sure that's the norm.
jskd82 said: How do you like those 588's? I'm thinking of picking up a set of cg11's.
